Venue Comments :

The Australia was a single level theatre that for many years screened foreign films. The Australia Cinema in its early years screened move over programmes from other theatres, so if you missed it first time around there was a chance you could catch it later at the Australia. The Australia closed in mid 60s for renovation and reopened 6 weeks later on September 01, 1966. The Australia was taken over by the Village chain in c1968. The theatre was renamed the Australia Twin One not long after coming under the control of Village. The Australia and Curzon Cinemas were now called the Australia Twin Cinemas. On 07 June 1968 the first film shown under the control of Village was, Up The Junction. (Walters 2009, p. 225)
